ZFM responds to incident at Try Me Supermarket
The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality has taken note of a video circulating on social media regarding an incident that occurred on Saturday at Try Me Supermarket. This morning, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Maryna Basson, accompanied by officials from the Environmental Health Services Unit, visited the premises to assess the situation and establish the facts surrounding the incident.
Preliminary findings confirm that individuals unlawfully helped themselves to goods from pallets that were positioned outside the store. This act constitutes looting. The owners of Try Me Supermarket had no control over the individuals who seized the goods and fled the scene. It must be clarified that the products were not being discarded or made available to the public. These items were in transit to a storage facility for return to the service provider.
We urge community members to remain cautious and vigilant when purchasing food items, particularly by checking expiry dates to ensure safety. It is also important to dispel the misinformation circulating online and to rely on verified information before drawing conclusions. Try Me Supermarket is in possession of a valid Certificate of Acceptability (COA), a legally required document issued in terms of Regulation R638 under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 54 of 1972. This certificate confirms that the business complies with hygiene and food safety regulations and is legally permitted to operate.
The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality distances itself from any individual or business that knowingly sells or purchases expired food. Such practices are not only unethical but also endanger public health. We call on all community members to remain alert and responsible. Do not buy expired or suspicious food products. Protect your health and that of your loved ones by purchasing only from compliant, reputable sources.
