ZFM ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVE MAYOR
During a Special Council meeting held on the 23rd June 2022, the ZF Mgcawu District Municipal Council elected its new Executive Mayor. Following the resignation of former Executive Mayor Councillor Marius Louw, a vacancy occurred in the Council.
In terms of Section 55 (2) of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, a vacancy in the office of the Executive Mayor must be filled when necessary and as such Council was obligated to elect an Executive Mayor as a matter of urgency.
A formal nomination and voting by secret ballot process took place and the incumbent, Councillor Maureen Catherine Basson was elected as the Executive Mayor of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality.
In her inaugural speech, the newly elected Executive Mayor pledged her commitment towards the smooth running of the institution. “I ask that we function as an effective Council, respect each other regardless of our different political affiliations and that we will always put the community first as they put us first when they chose us as leaders,” she said.
Councillor Basson brings with her a wealth of experience in Local Government having served as Speaker and Chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) of the District Municipality.
The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality wishes to congratulate the newly elected Executive Mayor Councillor Basson and trusts she will lead the District to higher heights.
