ZF Mgcawu District Municipality takes firm action on Food Safety at FoodZone Hyper

The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality’s Environmental Health Unit has taken decisive action following a public complaint regarding the improper handling and storage of meat at FoodZone Hyper in Upington. An unannounced inspection was carried out in line with the District Municipality’s mandate to enforce food safety and hygiene standards and to protect the health and well-being of the community.

During the unannounced inspection at FoodZone Hyper, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Maryna Basson and the Speaker, Cllr Stanley Peterson, actively participated in the assessment process. Their presence underscored the District Municipality’s commitment to ensuring public health and safety, demonstrating leadership engagement in addressing concerns related to food hygiene and compliance with regulatory standards.

The inspection identified serious breaches of food safety regulations, presenting a potential risk to consumers. In response, a Prohibition Notice was immediately issued, requiring the termination of all activities that compromise food safety, particularly those relating to the handling and storage of meat. Management at FoodZone Hyper has been formally instructed, in writing, to implement corrective measures immediately to ensure full compliance with environmental health requirements.

The District Municipality will conduct a follow-up inspection to confirm that all corrective actions have been implemented. Failure to comply will result in escalated enforcement measures, which may include legal action in terms of applicable legislation. The Environmental Health Unit urges the public to continue reporting suspected non-compliance. Every complaint is taken seriously and investigated thoroughly to safeguard a safe, healthy and compliant environment for all residents.
