Spaza Shop Multi-Disciplinary Inspections in !Kheis Local Municipality
The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality, under the leadership of Executive Mayor Councillor Maryna Basson, conducted joint operations in the !Kheis Local Municipality to ensure compliance with trade and food safety regulations. The Executive Mayor was joined by the !Kheis Mayor Councillor Davey Jacobs, Members of the Mayoral Committee, and Ward Councillors during these critical inspections.
The District Joint Operations initiative targeted the registration of Spaza shops and the inspection of food product safety. A total of 12 tuckshops were visited, resulting in the closure of five shops. Prohibition notices were issued to non-compliant establishments, citing significant risks to public health.
The inspections revealed alarming violations, including extreme unhygienic practices.
The Environmental Health Practitioners discovered amongst others:
• Dead fish heads stored alongside frozen meat.
• Rotten meat and spoiled fruits and vegetables left unattended.
• Chicken improperly stored on the ground in unhygienic coolers.
• Suspicious water filtering tanks and equipment with untraceable water sources.
Confiscated food products were safely disposed of to prevent potential health hazards. These findings underscore the critical need for adherence to food safety standards.
