Gift of the Givers assists Communities affected by Flooding

The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality is experiencing increased water levels mainly due to the overflow and water releases from as far as the Gariep and Bloemhof Dams. The Local Municipalities that are affected by the rising water levels are primarily the Kai !Garib Local Municipality and the Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality.

The District Municipality communicated with the Gift of the Givers Foundation to request their assistance and based thereon they agreed to come to Kai !Garib Municipality. A helicopter was used to go to those islands that cannot be accessed otherwise. The coordination of getting Gift of the Givers was a joint effort between the officials of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality and the Kai !Garib Local Municipality.

By the end of business on the 2nd of March 2023, 1500 food parcels were distributed in the course of 2 days with the generosity of gift of the givers. An assessment for the delivery of the food parcels was made and the simplest criteria used was to provide food to those families hardest affected by the floods. In this case to reach those islands which are cut off and those families cut off and thus had no supplies, and secondly, families that were evacuated and taken to the place of safety (evacuation sites).

The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality is grateful for the assistance received from the Gift of Givers Foundation and their quick response to the adversity faced by our people. We are grateful that no loss of life or serious injury as a result of the flooding can be reported. Furthermore, there has been no need for rescue missions caused by people in the waters.

As the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality we wish to thank all the stakeholders who formed part of the various teams that ensured the safety of our communities. We are proud to work with stakeholders that help us support communities before, during, and after disasters and we are strengthened by your commitment to help those in need.
